Reconnection
The scientists noticed differences between the smaller sunspot's emission height and the one close to Earth – perhaps that's what happened due to those powerful magnet chains holding both ends (or more simply, things moving towards each other).

A plasma process in which a magnetic field reconnects by breaking and reforming, typically occurring in regions with different magnetic field strengths.
