When it shines on certain gases, it makes them glow, kind of like a blacklight makes neon signs brighter.

Technical definition

Lyman Alpha is a specific line emission corresponding to the energy transition from ground state to excited state (1s2 2p ↑ → 1s ε n l; n≥ 2) in hydrogen, detectable by spectroscopy.
