Large-scale white noise (LSWN)
The scientists realized that if there were too many gravitational waves from far away, it would create "noise" in space – making it harder to detect other things.
Technical definition
LSWN refers to a stochastic, diffuse background of gravitational wave signals that can obscure or pollute the detection of weaker, more localized gravitational wave events.
