Dispersion Measure (DM)
The echo bounces back and tells you something about what's in between. In this case, the DM helps scientists understand how far away FRBs are.
Technical definition
A measure of the time delay between the arrival of a radio pulse at different frequencies, used to infer the distance and plasma density along the line of sight to a Fast Radio Burst.
